What Materials are RV Pedestals Made From?

Ever wonder what materials RV pedestals and surface boxes are typically manufactured with, and how it impacts their durability and performance?

Power outlets for use at RV parks and campgrounds are also referred to as RV pedestals, RV surface box, RV surface mount box, RV hookup, and RV plug-in.  Most power outlets for RV use will differ slightly in their dimensions and weight, but typically are constructed of the same steel. Galvanized steel with a G90 coating is typical for RV power outlets.

Galvanized Steel

G90 galvanized steel goes through a process to get its corrosion-resistant finish.  G90 is not a galvanizing specification.  Rather, it is a coating thickness designation in the galvanizing spec ASTM A653.  It is cold rolled steel sheet that is hot dip coated with a durable protective coating of zinc. It is intended for use where corrosion is a consideration.  It is uniform and has sufficient ductility to withstand deep drawing or bending without damage to the coating. It is dull gray in appearance, has no spangle, and is well suited to painting.

What Role Does Zinc Play?

The zinc serves as a barrier against the elements and as a cathode for the electrochemical processes that would otherwise oxidize the iron in the steel. Water and ionic compounds from the environment react with the zinc coating rather than with the steel beneath it.  Once bent or formed, the steel gets one of the most durable protective coatings by applying a polyester powder coating.

Polyester Powders

Polyester powders are thermosetting resins that are applied electrostatically to the steel surface, producing uniform coatings that have an attractive finish with excellent weathering characteristics. Zinc and the polyester resin from the powder provide a synergistic protective effect. The polyester topcoat protects the zinc and the zinc protects the galvanized steel beneath it. The American Galvanizers Association (AGA) and Society of Protective Coatings (SSPC) state that this duplex process potentially increases the service life of the part by as much as two and one-half times the life of the part with either coating alone.

NEMA-rated enclosures are essential for protecting electrical and electronic equipment in less than desirable weather environments. The NEMA 3R rating is one of the more commonly used NEMA ratings for outdoor enclosures like RV power outlets.  NEMA 3R enclosures are designed to be undamaged by the external formation of ice and protects against light dripping and splashing of water associated with rain and snow.

In summary, RV pedestals and surface mount boxes are typically manufactured of G90 galvanized steel, powder coated with a gray high-shine polyester finish and meet or exceed NEMA 3R ratings for outdoor use.
