Lighting an RV Park Using Solar Lighting – Go Green, Save Green

Solar lighting has come a long way; so far in fact, you could say it has arrived!  No longer should the misconception of poor-quality light output be whispered in dark alleys.  With goals like improved safety, cost-savings, aesthetics and curb appeal, installing new lights or upgrading existing lights to solar-powered has many benefits.

In addition to preserving our environment, using solar power is going to save money, a win-win.  When a park is expansive over many many acres, there are areas that just can’t be feasibly lit with old school hard-wired lights.  Whether the problem is the distance to a power source or the topography that makes it overall cost prohibitive, going solar is a solution with endless possibilities where it can useful.  Because solar power comes from the sun and is 100% free and forever, there’s far fewer expenses associated with installation and maintenance.  Like the need for wire or the conduit it gets buried in – HAVE YOU CHECKED THE PRICE OF COPPER LATELY?  And in most instances, an existing pole can be re-used by simply adding a solar fixture.

There are a few considerations when going solar.  In order to collect and store power, a solar panel must have direct sunlight.  Unfortunately, the sun doesn’t always shine everywhere.  But, solar lighting during winter months works even in snow and ice if it gets enough direct sunlight each day (this varies by brand, apx 4 hours) to fully charge.  Generally speaking, severe weather will have little impact on high quality solar lights.

There are many options to upgrade an existing pole or fixture.  Oftentimes, you can switch out an existing bulb / lamp fixture with a solar lamp head/ fixture upgrade or replace both the pole and fixture.  Solar lamp heads with fitter attachments will fit atop most standard 3-inch diameter posts, making them ideal for repurposing and retrofitting.  For safety, have a licensed electrician disconnect and cap the existing gas or electric line prior to making any changes or upgrades.  When replacing the fixture or lamp head only, do the research to ensure the repurposed pole can support the weight of the solar fixture.  And, if the repurposed pole is in a shaded area and doesn’t get direct sunlight, it will have to be relocated.
